During the holidays my son, Charlie, and I designed and made two marble runs from things that we had at home (cardboard, tape).
The first one was quite basic. I built the base and Charlie told me where to put the strips of cardboard.
The second one was more complicated. I drew a grid on some cardboard and Charlie drew the path that the marbles would travel along.
Then I made walls from card (it took ages!) and the end result looks like this:
Your Challenge: Create your own marble run from things you can find at home
Post the results (photos etc) to your own blog
Here's how our marble runs worked...
This looks like such a fun activity Mr Rattenbury, thanks for sharing your creativity with us. Has Charlie been playing with the marble run a lot? What was the most difficult thing when you were making it? Perhaps next time you could use wood to make it, so that it lasts longer. I really like the way that it has little spaces where the marble could escape to - that makes the game more challenging and exciting. I wonder if any of the Haumia students could make something like this?
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment Miss McGrath. It was fun (and challenging) to make. Charlie has played with the marble runs quite a bit (mostly the bigger one which we have upgraded a bit). We used more than one marble in the small one which was more of a challenge. Probably the most difficult thing when making it was trying to tape the walls on...it was really fiddly.
DeleteI really like your marble runs you made for Charlie. I like it because it is complicated. We have started making one on our wall in the lounge.
ReplyDeleteHow long did it take to make the second one?
You could put colour on it, to decorate it.
Thanks for your comment Danielle. The second marble run took a few hours to make but I think it was worth it because we can use it for a long time.
DeleteHi Mr Rattenbury, I really like the marble runs you made for Charlie. I made a marble run too though mine was a little more complicated. I also made a movie out of it, my dad helped me with it.
ReplyDeleteThe video for it is on my blog.
Thank you for your comments Madeline. Good on you for having a go at making your own marble run. I will have to check out your video.
ReplyDeleteI like both of your marble runs, creative and clever. Charlie's a pro with the second marble run. Have you tried substituting the marble with something else e.g. an ant or even a daddy long-legs spider at the start? What a fun activity Mr Rattenbury.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't thought of using insects! We did try up to 7 marbles...it was more of a challenge to get them all to the finish.
DeleteThis looks like lots of fun. Maybe some children from Haumia could make one and put some photos on your blog for us to see.
ReplyDeleteKeep those interesting ideas flowing.
Stay safe in your bubble, from Mrs Mackenzie
