Matariki

Matariki is a time of year (late May/early July) when a certain cluster of stars becomes visible in the night sky (also known as the Pleiades). It signals the beginning of the Maori New Year. We have been learning some things about Matariki and spent a day in the last week of Term 2 creating different pieces related to Matariki.

We contributed towards the creation of a contemporary korowai (traditional feather cloak made and worn by Maori)...

We created pounamu (greenstone) pendants...

And we constructed manu tukutuku (Maori kites)...
