Tread Lightly Caravan

We had a visit from Phil and Hannah from the Tread Lightly Caravan today. They came to talk to us about caring for the environment, the water we use and where it goes.

We learned about the wetlands and how they help the environment...

...and how pollution affects the environment.

We found out the different places water goes (down drains inside and outside)...

...and we even checked where the drains were around the school (until it got too wet).

After our learning we looked at different ways we could have a better impact on the environment and chose one to try out. Here are the choices:
  • pick up litter and put it in the correct bin
  • use the correct flush button on the toilet
  • turn off the tap when brushing teeth
  • wash the car on the grass
  • have short showers instead of baths
  • join in on a tree planting or beach clean up day
  • use public transport instead of cars
  • teach family how to look after drains
  • walk, bike or scooter when travelling short distance
What one could you start doing?

Special Assembly

After the tragic events of last week in Christchurch, we held a special assembly today. We talked about the importance of showing tolerance towards others and how we should celebrate our differences.

The school assembled outside afterwards and students, representing a range of nations from around the world, helped to plant a kowhai tree next to our friendship seat.

The friendship seat and kowhai tree

Each class then brought up a card with messages of support and sorrow, which will be sent to different schools in Christchurch.

The card from Haumia...

...and our messages inside...

May peace cover you and remain with you, Christchurch.
